“River of Soul Vessels” is part of “Tribute 911,” a process my community used to express the convolution of anger and sadness in the aftermath of 911. Adults and children alike came together for 2 weeks forming hundreds of small pinch pots.

Each vessel is a commemoration to a life lost in the events of 911. The vessels were dried and then fired in a large pit fire.  The earthwork is a merging of earth, wind, fire and water—the basic elements.

The “soul vessels” are worn by the seasons and eventually go back to the Earth Mother, only after rain tears fill each tiny vessel to overflowing.

An appreciation goes out to all those who participated in the making, firing and placing of these vessels. Special thanks goes to the support of Walla Walla University, Whitman College and Walla Walla Community College.
