March 31, 2008 -- Inside Suriname: A Documentary Project in the Making
Threats to tribal peoples in South America are the topic of a special film documentary to be premiered in College Place on Monday (March 31) at 7 p.m.

Inside Suriname is a documentary being produced by College Place filmmaker Jerry Hartman. The film uses a community-directed approach that puts community members in control of cameras and content. Hartman and the crew of Inside Suriname will screen original footage and share production experiences from their recent trip to the small nation in northern South America.

The film documents the stories of Maroon and Indigenous tribes of interior Suriname as they face global development that threatens their survival. In a modern day gold rush their land is stolen, their water is poisoned and their cultures are on the verge of extinction. Inside Suriname is their voice to the world as they decide how they will face their futures and who they will become.

Inside Suriname is a production of Eclectic Reel, LLC in partnership with Suriname Indigenous Health Fund (sihf.org). Both organizations are committed to community-directed research and intervention that empowers underserved communities.

The screening will be held at the Donnie Rigby Stage, corner of 4th and Davis streets in College Place. The event is free and open to the public. It is part of the “March of Peace,” a series of peace-related activities planned during the month. For more information, contact Machelle Hartman at 509.529.3747
