BIOGRAPHY  b. 1954  Colorado, USA

anne throwing Anne Bullock is a multi-media artist who works from her Dancing Wind Studio in Southeastern Washington State. She works in a variety of media; however, clay is her grounding medium. She has a wide range of interests, but is specifically influenced by both Japanese and American Indian aesthetic traditions.

Bullock identifies with abstract expressionists and appreciates works from Kandinsky to DeKooning. She has particular interest in the art and artists of the 1950s to the 1970s such as Rothko, Pollock, Frankenthaler, Nevelson, and Henry Moore; other favorites include Degas, Cezanne, Van Gogh, Giacometti, Kollwitz, Klee, Miro, and Noguchi.

In the world of ceramics, she has high regard for the contributions and work of Bernard Leach and Shoji Hamada.  The delicate porcelain works of Mary Rogers and Lucie Rie are inspirational as well as the work of Pueblo potters, Lucy Lewis and Maria Martinez. Bullock has studied with Bill Piper, Poncho of Tucson, Robert Pipenberg, Paul Lewing, Ken MacIntosh, Tom Emmerson, Martha Mason, and most recently life drawing with Barbara Black and Jeff Burke.

anne bullock in studioShe grew up on Colorado’s Western Slope, but has lived in Washington State for the past 30 years. After 12 years as an elementary teacher, she left that career to pursue advanced study in Teaching and Teacher Education with special emphasis in Art Education at the University of Arizona (1988-1992). During her study, she was involved in research related to middle school teaching methodology for teachers of art. She assisted with the Discipline-Based Art Education program of the J. Paul Getty Institute in 1989. More recently she has taught ceramics and ceramic sculpture at Walla Walla Community College and Walla Walla University.

Bullock’s work has been featured in solo exhibits at the Marilyn Stewart Gallery, Fenton-Stahl Gallery, Clyde and Mary Harris Gallery, Walla Walla Community College Gallery, and Pendleton Center for the Arts. She has been featured in shows at Whitman Cellars and Carnegie Art Center of Walla Walla, Richland Allied Arts Gallery, Wenaha Gallery in Dayton, and Oak Hollow Gallery in Yakima.
