In this seven-piece series, the hand carved texture of five pieces depicts sumach branches in low relief. The two larger stylized squares are impressed and imprinted with an assortment of shapes; these two pieces were especially influenced by the color of sumach. The two 15 x 15 inch square platters are designed as wall hangings (wire is configured on the back).

I consider this earthenware decorative because of the delicate glaze. This low-fire oxidation glaze is a unique, highly textured glaze rich with manganese dioxide and lithium. When applied thinly the glaze is an earthy brown matt black and when it is applied thickly--a red orange lava breaks through. Each piece has survived multiple firings and applications.
